Bride's Dual Identity |
Christ's
victorious spouse is both God's dwelling place and a mighty army against the enemy |
Beautiful as
Tirzah before God, terrible as an army with banners against the enemy |
The Shulammite
as Solomon's counterpart, typifying New Jerusalem; banners indicating
preparation for war and victory |
The church must
simultaneously manifest God's beauty and deal with God's enemy, accomplishing the dual purpose: expressing God and dealing
with His enemy |
"You are as beautiful as Tirzah, my love, as lovely as
Jerusalem, as terrible as an army with banners." (S.S. 6:4);
"Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image,
according to Our likeness; and let them have dominion over..."
(Gen. 1:26) |
Formation of Corporate Warrior |
Overcomers
collectively become the bride, becoming an army after marriage with Christ;
spiritual meaning of Mahanaim's two camps |
After the
wedding, becoming an army to fight with Christ against Antichrist; signifying surpassing victory according to the principle
of Christ's Body |
After Jacob met
God's messengers, he divided his wives and children into two camps; God uses
the weaker women and children |
Those who are
weaker and depend on the Lord are counted worthy to be overcomers; God needs
those who are one with Him, submit to Him with soft wills |
"In all these things we more than conquer through Him who
loved us." (Rom. 8:37); "But God has chosen the foolish
things... the weak things..." (1 Cor. 1:26-28); "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected
in weakness." (2 Cor. 12:9) |
Nature of Spiritual Warfare |
Fundamental
conflict between Satan's will opposing God's will; warfare
between God's kingdom and Satan's kingdom |
To establish
the kingdom of the heavens, conquer Satan's kingdom; accomplish
God's will, defeat God's enemy |
Satan said
"I
will ascend to heaven... I will make myself like the Most High"; all warfare stems from conflict of two wills |
Walk according
to truth and by grace, live in love and light, and war to conquer Satan's will |
"You said in
your heart, I will ascend to heaven... I will make myself like the Most High."
(Isa. 14:12-14); "If Satan casts out Satan... the kingdom of God has come upon you." (Matt. 12:26,28) |
Source of Warfare Power |
Need the
surpassing greatness of power that raised Christ from dead and seated Him
above all; cannot fight in ourselves |
Be empowered in
the Lord, by the might of His strength; exercise our will to make it strong
and disciplined |
Christ's
resurrection and ascension far above all principalities and powers;
need strong and disciplined will |
Can only fight
in the Lord, not by ourselves; must exercise our will to be empowered for
spiritual warfare |
"Which He caused to operate in Christ in raising Him from
the dead and seating Him at His right hand in the heavenlies, far above
all rule and authority..." (Eph. 1:19-21) |
Objects and Scope of Warfare |
Spiritual
warfare against evil forces in the heavenlies; rebellious angels who are
rulers, authorities, world-rulers of this darkness |

forces that followed Satan in rebellion against God, now ruling over nations |
The prince of
Persia in Daniel opposing God's messenger; activities of rebellious angels in
the heavenlies |

warfare is not against blood and flesh but against evil spirits and spiritual
forces; need to realize the real enemy |
"For our wrestling is not against blood and flesh,
but against the rulers, against the authorities, against
the world-rulers of this darkness, against
the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenlies." (Eph. 6:12) |
Importance of Corporate Warfare |
Spiritual
warfare is not individual matter but corporate warriors as Christ's bride;
the church is the corporate warrior |
Believers
together constitute the corporate warrior fighting God's enemy; God's
strategy is to use church as His army |
God's full
armor is for the Body, not individuals; Satan's strategy is to separate
believers from the church |
We must
corporately form an army to fight God's enemy; only corporate warriors can
put on God's full armor |
"Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to
withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." (Eph.
6:13) |
Belt of Truth |
God in Christ
as the reality of our living, becoming our belt |
Strengthen our
whole being for spiritual warfare, girding us up |
Ancient
soldiers first girded their loins before battle; belt gives strength to whole
body for warfare |
Gird up with
the reality of God in Christ, let Christ be the reality of our living |
"Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth..."
(Eph. 6:14a); "I am the... truth..."
(John 14:6) |
Breastplate of Righteousness |
Christ as our
righteousness, becoming breastplate covering our conscience |
Protect our
conscience from Satan's accusations, covering our heart |
Breastplate
protects warrior's vital heart area; righteousness covers our conscience |
Let Christ as
our righteousness cover conscience, not living under condemnation but
justification |
"...and having put on the breastplate of righteousness."
(Eph. 6:14b); "But of Him you are in Christ
Jesus, who became wisdom to us from God: both righteousness..."
(1 Cor. 1:30) |
Gospel Shoes of Peace |
Christ is the
peace making us one with God and saints; peace is solid foundation |
Enable us to
stand against enemy; provide solid foundation and foothold |
Soldier's shoes
enable firm standing on battlefield; gospel brings peace between God and man |
Feet shod with
gospel of peace, Christ as peace becomes our foundation for standing |
"For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one and has
broken down the middle wall of partition..." (Eph. 2:14) |
Shield of Faith |
Christ is the
Author and Perfecter of our faith, becoming our shield |
Resist enemy's
flaming darts, extinguish all Satan's flaming arrows |
Ancient shields
deflected enemy
arrows; faith resists Satan's attacks |
Take up shield
of faith, with Christ as object of our faith to resist Satan |
"Besides all these, having taken up the shield of faith,
with which you will be able to quench all the flaming darts of the
evil one." (Eph. 6:16) |
Helmet of Salvation |
The saving
Christ we experience in daily life, covering and protecting our mind |
Cover and
protect our mind from attacks, protect the head in warfare |
Helmet protects
warrior's head; Christ's salvation protects our mind |
Put on helmet
of salvation, let Christ as our daily salvation protect the mind |
"In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I
have overcome the world." (John 16:33) |
Sword of the Spirit |
The Spirit,
which is the word of God, becomes our attacking weapon |
Cut down the enemy, attack Satan and evil forces |
Sword is
warrior's only offensive weapon; God's word can pierce through hearts |
Use God's word
as sword of Spirit to attack enemy, with God's word as weapon |
"For the word of God is living and operative and sharper
than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and
spirit..." (Heb. 4:12) |
Importance of Prayer |
Prayer is the
unique, decisive, indispensable means |
Apply God's
full armor, make all items of armor practically available to us |
Pray at every
time in spirit, pray for all saints; prayer makes armor effective |
Apply all armor
through prayer; without prayer armor cannot function effectively |
"By means of all prayer and petition, praying at every time
in spirit, and watching unto this in all perseverance and petition concerning all the saints." (Eph.
6:18) |
Results and Goals of Warfare |
Stand against devil's stratagems and
evil schemes, stand firm in warfare |
Gain more of
Christ, build up Christ's Body, prepare Christ's bride, establish and expand
God's kingdom |
Sit with
Christ, walk in Christ's Body, stand in Christ's power; having done all,
still stand |
Cooperate with
Lord against Satan's aerial forces, enable Christ to return and inherit
earth, accomplish God's eternal purpose |
"That He might present the church to Himself glorious..."
(Eph. 5:27); "The kingdom of the world has
become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ..." (Rev. 11:15) |
Today's Practical Application |
Today in the
Lord's recovery, we are on battlefield, must recognize reality of spiritual
warfare |
Cooperate with
Lord against Satan's aerial forces, build up Christ's Body
and prepare Christ's bride |
The Lord's
recovery is for preparing Christ's bride; we all need to be conformed to
Shulammite |
Establish and
expand God's kingdom, enable Christ to return and inherit earth, complete
God's purpose in church |
"Suffer evil with me as a good soldier of Christ Jesus."
(2 Tim. 2:3) "His bride has made herself ready."
(Rev. 19:7) |
This table systematically
organizes the various aspects of the important truth of "the bride as a group warrior". From the table we
can see:
Dual identity: the bride is both a beautiful spouse
and a mighty army
Group nature: spiritual warfare is not an
individual act, but a matter of the church as a group
warrior
The nature of the battle: this is a fundamental conflict between
God's will and Satan's will
Source of power: must be strengthened in the Lord, cannot fight on their own
Equipment needs: need to wear the full armor of God, each
piece has its specific function
Importance of prayer: prayer is the key to apply the armor
Ultimate goal: to build the body of Christ, prepare the
bride of Christ, and expand the kingdom of God
This truth reminds us that
as the bride of Christ, we must not only pursue an intimate relationship with the Lord, but
also stand firm in spiritual warfare and fight against God's enemies in
a group until the Lord comes again.
