Why Does the Bible Mention “Ministering Life to Others” Only in 1 John
5:16?
1 John 5:14 This is the
confidence with which we approach him: that he hears us if we ask anything
according to his will.
1 John 5:15 If we know that he
hears us when we ask, we know that we have what we asked of him.
1 John 5:16 If anyone sees his
brother committing a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray for him
and give him his life—even for those who commit sins that do not lead to death.
But I do not say that one should pray for sins that lead to death.

Key Verse |
“If anyone sees
his brother sinning a sin not unto death, he shall ask and he will give life
to him.” — First
Epistle of John 5:16 |
|
Meaning |
Ministering
life is not
merely teaching, exhorting, or comforting others
naturally; it is dispensing the divine life into others through prayer in the
fellowship of the divine life. |
|
Why Mentioned Only Here? |
Because this is
not an ordinary spiritual practice; it requires a believer abiding in the
Lord, being one with Him, and becoming a channel through which the
life-giving Spirit flows into others. |
|
Reason |
First John
especially emphasizes the fellowship of the divine life. In chapter 5, this
life is revealed not only for personal enjoyment, but
also for supplying other members of the Body of
Christ. |
|
Nature of Life Supply |
To supply life
is to dispense life. The believer himself is not the source; God dispenses
life through one who is united with Him. |
|
Spiritual Background |
In the church
life, believers are members one of another. When a member becomes weak or
falls into
sin, death operates within him and he needs life
supply from other members. |
|
Illustration 1: Blood Circulation |
The Body of
Christ is like a human body. Divine life flows like blood circulation from
healthy members to weak members. |
|
Illustration 2: Vine and Branches |
As branches
abiding in the vine receive the life flow, they may also minister this life
to others. — Gospel of John 15:4–5 |
|
Illustration 3: Water Channel |
The praying
believer is not the source of life but a channel through which
God flows into others. |
|
Explanation 1: Overcoming Death |
Eternal life
overcomes not
only the death within ourselves but also the death operating in fellow believers. |
|
Explanation 2: Prayer Is the Means |
Life is
supplied primarily through prayer in fellowship with God, not merely outward
action. |
|
Explanation 3: According to God’s Will |
Genuine
life-imparting prayer is according to God’s will, not according to human
emotion or preference. |
|
Explanation 4: Being One with the Lord |
Only one
abiding in the Lord and being one spirit with Him can touch God’s intention. — First Corinthians 6:17 |
|
Explanation 5: Abiding in Fellowship |
The prayer in 1 John 5:16 is a prayer in the fellowship of the divine life. |
|
Effect 1: Swallowing Up Death |
Weakness, darkness,
coldness, and spiritual death are overcome by the
divine life. |
|
Effect 2: Restoring Fellowship |
The fallen
believer is restored to fellowship with God and the Body. |
|
Effect 3: Reviving Church Life |
The church
becomes a realm of life flow rather than mere teachings and activities. |
|
Effect 4: Building Up the Body |
The circulation
of life builds up the Body of Christ. |
|
Purpose |
God desires not only people who receive life, but also those who minister life to others. |
|
Why Not a General Command? |
Because this
requires spiritual maturity, deep fellowship, and union with the Lord;
natural zeal cannot dispense divine life. |
|
Remedy 1: Abide in the Lord |
One must first
abide in Christ before supplying life to others. — Gospel of John 15:7 |
|
Remedy 2: Maintain Fellowship |
A pure
conscience and continuous fellowship allow life to flow
freely. |
|
Remedy 3: Deal with the Self |
The stronger the self, the
more blocked the life flow becomes. |
|
Remedy 4: Learn Intercession |
Real life
supply often comes through hidden intercession rather than outward
correction. |
|
Remedy 5: Have the Overflow of Life |
One must first
be filled inwardly before having a surplus to supply others. |
|
Spiritual Relationship |
Abiding in the
Lord produces fellowship; fellowship produces prayer according to God’s will;
such prayer dispenses life and overcomes death. |
|
Spiritual Sequence |
Abiding in
Christ → Living in fellowship →
Knowing God’s will → Interceding → Becoming a channel →
Ministering life. |
|
Biblical Example 1: Moses |
Moses
interceded for Israel before God so that the people might live.
— Book of Exodus 32:11–14 |
|
Biblical Example 2: Abraham |
Abraham
interceded for Sodom in fellowship with God. — Book of Genesis 18:23–33 |
|
Biblical Example 3: The Lord Jesus and Peter |
The Lord prayed
for Peter that his faith would not fail. — Gospel of Luke 22:32 |
|
Biblical Example 4: Paul |
Paul ministered
not only teaching but also life to the churches. — First Epistle to the
Thessalonians 2:8 |
|
Practical Application |
1.
When seeing a weak brother, first pray instead of
criticizing. 2.
In meetings, seek to minister life, not merely doctrines. 3.
In service, become a channel of life instead of
displaying natural ability. 4.
When the church atmosphere becomes spiritually dead,
life-imparting intercession is needed. 5.
The greatest help believers can receive is not knowledge but the supply of life. |
|
Burden |
God desires to
gain believers who can minister His life into others. |
|
Prophetic Speaking Guidance |
Genuine
prophesying is not merely speaking doctrines but supplying divine life into others through union with the
Lord. |
|
Spiritual Warning |
Service outside
the fellowship of life may impart pressure, condemnation, and death instead of life. |
|
Central Revelation |
1 John 5:16 reveals the highest form of intercession: allowing God’s
life to flow into others through one who is one with Him. |
|
One-Sentence Summary |
“True
intercession not only brings man’s need to God, but
also brings God’s life into man.” |
|
Conclusion |
The Bible
mentions “giving life” explicitly only in 1 John 5:16 because it unveils
the deepest experience of the divine fellowship: a believer abiding in the
Lord becomes a channel for the dispensing of divine life into other members
of the Body. |
