No Longer Slaves Working under Law, but Sons Living in Life under Grace

Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,

Galatians 4:5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

Galatians 4:6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!”

Galatians 4:7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and as a son, an heir through God.

The spiritual sequence of Galatians 4:4–7 is extremely rich:

This is much deeper than simply changing from “law” to “grace.” It is a transition from an outward religious system to an inward divine-life relationship.

3. Core Relationship

The central relationship can be summarized as follows:

Law  Law requires.

Grace  Grace supplies.

Christ  Christ accomplishes redemption.

Spirit  The Spirit applies and makes Christ real within us.

Life  Divine life produces sonship.

Sonship  Sonship gives us the Father's relationship and nature in life.

Heirship  Heirship gives us the right and capacity to inherit God.

Therefore: Law demands what man should be; grace gives God Himself to man so that man may become what God desires.

This is why the Christian life is not merely:  “Try harder to obey God.”

It is:  “Receive God, enjoy God, live by God, and allow God to live through you.”

4. How the Triune God Makes Us Sons

Galatians 4:4–7 gives us a beautiful revelation of the operation of the Triune God.

The Son	Comes under the law and accomplishes redemption.	Delivers us from the bondage and condemnation of the law.
The Spirit	Enters our hearts as the Spirit of the Son.	Makes the sonship inward, experiential, and living.
Father → Son → Spirit	The Triune God carries out His economy in us.	We become sons possessing the divine life.
Our Response	Believe, receive, turn to the spirit, enjoy Christ, and walk by the Spirit.	We experience the reality of sonship.
Maturity	The divine life grows within us.	We become mature sons and heirs.
Inheritance	We inherit God through sonship.	God Himself becomes our portion and inheritance.

The key point

We do not become God's heirs:

• by keeping the law,
• by natural birth,
• by human achievement,
• or merely by religious performance.

We become heirs through God.

Galatians 4:7 says:  “So you are no longer a slave but a son; and if a son, an heir also through God.”

The progression is therefore:  Father → Son → Spirit → Sonship → Heirship

5. Spiritual Parable

The Slave and the Son

Imagine a household with two people.

The Slave

Every morning the slave asks:  “What does my master require me to do today?”

His relationship is based upon:  Command → obligation → work → completion → reward

The Son

The son asks:  “What is my father doing, and how can I live together with him?”

His relationship is based upon:  Life → fellowship → enjoyment → growth → inheritance

This illustrates the difference between:  religious service and sonship life.

The son does not stop working. Rather, the source of his work changes.

The slave works to fulfill an external requirement. The son works out of the father's life and love.

Therefore, the New Testament does not teach: “Do nothing.”

It teaches:

“Do everything from the divine life rather than from the principle of law and the natural self.”

6. Practical Application

7. Ministry Burden

1. From Law to Life

The burden is not merely to teach believers to obey more rules, but to bring them from the principle of law into the principle of life.

2. From Slave to Son

The believer must realize:

“I am not merely a forgiven sinner or a religious servant; I am a son of God possessing God's life.”

3. From Objective Truth to Subjective Experience

Sonship is not merely a theological status.

The Spirit of the Son has entered us.

Therefore, sonship must become our daily experience.

4. From Doing for God to Living God

The central issue is not merely:  “What can I do for God?”

but:  “How much is Christ living in me?”

Galatians 2:20 gives the key:  “It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.”

5. From Sonship to Maturity

God's goal is not merely to have newborn sons.

He desires mature sons who can inherit, express, and represent Him.

Therefore:  Regeneration → Growth → Maturity → Heirship → Glory

8. Prophetic Speaking / Prophesying Guidance

The following points can be used directly for prophetic speaking:

1.      We are no longer slaves under law; we are sons under grace.

2.      The law can demand God's righteousness, but only divine life can produce God's expression in us.

3.      The Father sent the Son to redeem us from under the law, and the Father sent the Spirit of the Son into our hearts to make sonship real within us.

4.      The Christian life is not primarily a matter of outward regulation but of inward life.

5.      A slave is centered on work; a son is centered on the Father's life and enjoyment.

6.      We do not become heirs by our works; we become heirs because we are sons, and we are sons through God.

7.      We should not return from grace to law, from sonship to slavery, or from the Spirit to the flesh.

8.      We should daily turn to the spirit, enjoy Christ, cry “Abba, Father,” and walk according to the Spirit.

9.      The goal of sonship is maturity—being conformed to the image of God's firstborn Son and participating in God's inheritance.

10.    The ultimate issue is not merely that we serve God, but that God is expressed through His sons.

10. Ultimate Conclusion

The deepest issue in Galatians 4 is not simply Law versus Grace.

It is: Slave versus Son.

And behind this is an even deeper contrast: Outward regulation versus inward divine life.

Therefore, the New Testament believer is not called merely to become a better servant of God.

God's eternal purpose is to make us His sons, possessing His life, expressing His Son, being led by His Spirit, inheriting God Himself, and eventually participating in His glory.

The decisive transition is:

From “What must I do for God?” to “What is God doing in me?”

And the mature Christian life is:

Not “I work for God so that I may become a son,” but “Because God has made me His son through Christ and the Spirit, I now live and serve out of His divine life.”
