Five Essentials of the Eternal Covenant in Jeremiah 32

Jer 32:39 "I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever, for their good and for their children after them."

Jer 32:40 "I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good."

Jer 32:40-41 "I will not turn away from doing them good... I will rejoice over them to do them good."

Jer 32:41 "I will faithfully plant them in this land with all My heart and soul."

Heb 13:5 "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

First Essential

Giving One Heart and One Way

To enable God's chosen people to love and seek God with one accord

1.      One Heart:

 to love God, seek God, live God, be constituted with God

2.      One Way:

the Triune God Himself as the inner law of life

Early church believers praying and meeting with one accord

1. Avoid pursuing anything outside of Christ

2. Prevent divisions

3. Maintain church unity

- Acts 1:14 "These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication."

- Acts 2:46 "Continuing daily with one accord in the temple."

- Acts 4:24 "They raised their voice to God with one accord."

- Rom 15:6 "That you may with one mind and one mouth glorify God."

Second Essential

Will Not Turn Away

To ensure God's faithfulness and preservation of His elect

God's unwavering promise to never forsake His people

God's faithfulness despite Israel's rebellion

1. Trust in God's faithfulness

2. Hold hope in tribulation

3. Experience God's unchanging love

Third Essential

Will Do Good

To manifest God's lovingkindness and grace

God will treat His people with love and compassion

God's care for Israel after exile

1. Receive God's grace

2. Experience God's love

3. Show kindness to others

- Ps 23:6 "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life."

Fourth Essential

Will Rejoice Over Them

To show God's satisfaction in His people

God rejoices in His people's growth and maturity

God's joy in Jerusalem's rebuilding

1. Please God

2. Live out God's glory

3. Become God's satisfaction

- Zeph 3:17 "The Lord your God in your midst... will rejoice over you with gladness."

Fifth Essential

Will Plant Them in This Land

To fulfill God's complete salvation plan

God will settle His people in Christ (the good land)

Rebuilding of temple after return from exile

1. Root in Christ

2. Experience Christ's riches

3. Pay the price to gain Christ

- Phil 3:8-14 "That I may gain Christ... I press toward the goal."

 

Key Conclusions:

1.      This eternal covenant is the new covenant centered on God's faithful promises to His people

2.      The covenant applies to both Israel and today's believers

3.      The ultimate purpose is to bring God's elect into the full experience of Christ

4.      The covenant requires believers' positive response: loving, seeking, and living God

5.      The realization of this covenant requires believers to pay a price in pursuing Christ
