Christ Marked Out as the Firstborn Son vs. We Marked Out as the Many Sons

The key to this theme is not merely comparing the "resurrection of Christ" with the "resurrection of believers," but rather seeing a complete lifeline of prototype → reproduction → corporate expression. 

Romans 1:3-4 juxtaposes the two aspects: Christ, though a descendant of David in the flesh, is marked as the Son of God in the resurrection; Romans 8:29 further reveals that this firstborn son becomes the firstborn son of many brothers. The central idea of ​​the status of the Son of God: Christ became the firstborn son in the resurrection so that many sons might be born who share His divine life and are similar to Him in life and nature.

The resurrection life must spread and grow within us until Christ is expressed through our whole being.	Christ’s marking was the completed prototype; ours is a continuing process.
The Function of Death	Christ’s death on the cross dealt with the old man, the old creation, sin, Satan, and the world.	The cross deals with our natural life, self, flesh, and old man so that the resurrection life can be released and expressed.	Death prepares the way for resurrection life to be manifested.
The Function of Resurrection	Resurrection brought Christ’s humanity into a new realm; His humanity was marked out and uplifted by divine life, making Him the Firstborn Son.	The resurrection life within us operates to destroy the outward man, renew the inward man, and eventually bring our whole being into glory. Application	We should not merely treasure Christ as the eternal Son; we should know Him as the Firstborn who is the Prototype of God’s corporate sonship.	We should learn to walk according to the spirit and allow the resurrection life of Christ to operate through our circumstances, failures, sufferings, and daily living.	We do not merely believe in Christ’s resurrection; we live by His resurrection life.
Ministry Burden	The gospel is the gospel concerning God’s Son—not merely forgiveness of sins, but the producing of sons.	Lead believers from regeneration into growth in life, transformation, conformation, and glorification for the building up of the Body.	The goal of the gospel is sonship; the corporate expression of sonship is the Body of Christ.

We participate in God’s life and nature and are progressively sanctified, transformed, conformed, and glorified as His sons.	Christ is the Prototype; we are His reproduction.

 

2. The Fourfold Order of Life

His resurrection was not merely an event in His personal history. It became the divine pattern and life-source for the producing of God’s many sons.

3. The Greatest Difference

The greatest difference is that Christ and believers are both related to sonship, but not in the same way or at the same stage.

Christ — the Prototype

Christ was already the eternal only begotten Son in His divinity before incarnation.

Therefore, Romans 1:4 does not mean that Christ was not the Son of God before resurrection and only became God’s Son afterward.

Rather:

The eternal Son acquired humanity through incarnation; in resurrection His humanity was marked out, uplifted, and glorified as the humanity of God’s Firstborn Son.

Thus, the resurrection brought Christ's humanity into the full expression of divine sonship.

Believers — the Reproduction

We, however, were not sons of God by nature.

We become God’s children through regeneration, receiving God’s divine life. Then this life must grow within us.

Therefore:

Christ was marked out as the Firstborn; we are being marked out as the many sons.

Christ’s process is the completed Prototype.

Our process is the ongoing reproduction.

And both are not becoming God in the Godhead, but participating in God’s life and nature.

Christ’s death and resurrection produced the Firstborn; the life of the Firstborn, operating in us through death and resurrection, produces the many sons; the many sons are built together as the Body of Christ; the Body consummates in the New Jerusalem.

5. The Final Spiritual Burden

The deepest burden is that the gospel is not merely the gospel of forgiveness—it is the gospel concerning the Son of God and the producing of sons.

Romans 1 begins with:

“the gospel of God” → “concerning His Son”

Romans 8 brings this to its goal:

the Son → the Firstborn → many brothers → many sons → the Body

Therefore, the ultimate purpose of Christ’s resurrection is not merely that Christ Himself would be raised from the dead. His resurrection became the life-producing event through which God’s corporate sonship could be brought forth.

Our experience of the cross likewise is not merely suffering or self-denial. The cross removes the outward shell of the natural man so that the resurrection life within us can grow, spread, transform us, and eventually be expressed through our entire being.

Thus:

The cross is the way; resurrection is the power; sanctification is the beginning; transformation is the process; conformation is the goal; glorification is the consummation; the many sons are the result; the Body of Christ is the corporate expression; and the New Jerusalem is the ultimate consummation.
