Jacob’s History vs. the Picture of the Spirit’s Ruling (Integrated Tables)
Genesis 47:9 Jacob said to
Pharaoh, “The days of my sojourn on earth were 130 years; and the days of my life were few and bitter, not even as many as the days of my fathers’ sojourn.”
Genesis 48:15 Then he blessed
Joseph, saying, “May the God before him, who has cared for my father Abraham
and my father Isaac in all his ways and in his
conduct, who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,
Hebrews 12:10 For the earthly
Father disciplines us for a short time according to his own good, but the Father of spirits disciplines us for our own good, so
that we may participate in his holiness.
Hebrews 12:11 Although all
discipline is not pleasant at the time but painful, later it produces a peaceful and righteous harvest for those
who have been trained in it.

Overview: The God of Jacob and the Ruling of the Holy Spirit
|
Item |
Jacob’s
History (the Picture) |
The
Spirit’s Work (the Reality) |
Scripture |
|
Meaning of the name |
“The God of
Jacob” is the dealing God. He did not merely bless Jacob; He
continually disciplined and carved him. |
The Holy Spirit
deals with
our natural life, constitutes Christ into us, and bears the fruit of the Spirit. |
Gen. 31:38-41; Gal.
5:22-23; Heb. 12:11 |
|
Method of working |
God dealt with
Jacob through circumstances, people, and events (Esau, Laban,
Leah, Rachel, Joseph, the famine). |
The Spirit’s
ruling is His working in our outward
environment, arranging all persons, matters, and experiences so that we may be
disciplined. |
Rom. 8:28; Heb. 12:9-11 |
|
Negative aspect |
Jacob’s
craftiness, self-reliance, favoritism, and natural strength were torn
down layer by layer. |
The “old
creation elements” within us are completely torn down. |
Gen. 32:25-32 |
|
Positive aspect |
Jacob changed
from a “supplanter” into “Israel,” and at the end of his life
blessed others in worship. |
The “new
creation elements” are built up within us. |
Gen. 47:9; 48:15-16a; Heb.
11:21 |
|
Ultimate goal |
A man
constituted by God, who became the foundation of God’s household
(the twelve tribes). |
Christ is
wrought into us, constituted in us, and formed in us, so
that the Triune God gains a corporate expression. |
Gal. 4:19; Eph. 3:16-21 |
II. Stages of Jacob’s Life: Outward Ruling → Inward Dealing → Christ’s
Constitution
|
Stage |
Scripture |
Jacob’s
Experience |
The
Spirit’s Arrangement of Circumstances |
Natural
Elements Torn Down |
New
Creation Elements Constituted |
|
1. Birth and striving |
Gen. 25:22-34; 27 |
Grasped his
brother’s heel at birth; bought the birthright with red stew; plotted with
his mother to obtain the blessing. |
God’s election
came first (Rom. 9:11-12), but Jacob used natural means to
“help God,” and as a result was forced to flee. |
Craftiness, reliance
on his
own cleverness, fleshly zeal |
The starting
point of God’s dealing |
|
2. Flight to Bethel |
Gen. 28:10-22 |
Left home
alone, used a stone as a pillow, saw the ladder in a dream, and God appeared to him. |
Circumstances
stripped away every support, so that he met God in the wilderness. |
Reliance on his
family
and his mother’s scheme |
First knew God as
“his God”; God’s presence and promise |
|
3. Twenty years in Laban’s house |
Gen. 29-31 |
Was deceived by Laban (Leah substituted for Rachel); his wages were
changed ten times; consumed by heat by day and
frost by night (31:40). |
The Spirit
arranged Laban to be the “plane,” dealing with craftiness through
craftiness. |
Craftiness, calculation,
self-reliance |
Endurance,
submission; twelve sons (the material for God’s house) |
|
4. Wrestling at Peniel |
Gen. 32:22-32 |
Feared Esau,
stayed alone overnight, wrestled with God, was touched on the hollow of his
thigh and
became lame; renamed Israel. |
God Himself acted,
dealing directly with his natural strength (the sinew of the thigh). |
Natural
strength and ability |
Dependence on
God, union with God; the new name “Israel” |
|
5. Shechem to Bethel |
Gen. 33-35:5 |
Lingered at
Shechem, where the incident with Dinah occurred; God commanded him to go up
to Bethel, and he put away the foreign gods. |
A circumstance
of failure and pain brought him back before God. |
Idols, worldly mixture,
compromise |
Cleansing,
return to God’s house; God reaffirmed his new name |
|
6. Death of Rachel |
Gen. 35:16-20 |
Rachel died in
childbirth, naming her son “Ben-oni” (son of my sorrow); Jacob renamed him
“Benjamin” (son of my right hand). |
God took away
the one he loved most. |
Natural
affection
and favoritism |
In suffering,
saw God’s right hand and God’s arrangement |
|
7. Loss of Joseph and the famine |
Gen. 37; 42-45 |
Thought Joseph
was dead and mourned for years; the famine forced him to send Benjamin
to Egypt. |
A series of
persons and events caused him to lose control again and again. |
Control,
clinging, attachment to his sons |
Entrustment;
learned to say “If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved” (43:14) |
|
8. Going down to Egypt and meeting Pharaoh |
Gen. 46-47 |
God said, “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt”; before Pharaoh he described his
years as “few and evil,” yet he blessed
Pharaoh first. |
The Spirit led
him through the entire journey and
brought him to maturity. |
Self, self-pity |
Spiritual
dignity: blessing others rather than seeking blessing from them (cf. Heb. 7:7) |
|
9. Deathbed blessing |
Gen. 48-49; Heb. 11:21 |
Worshiped
leaning on the top of his staff; crossed his hands to bless Ephraim and Manasseh; called God the One who had shepherded him all
his life. |
All the
circumstances of his life had become blessings. |
The natural
order (older and younger) was transcended |
Christ formed;
the fruit of peace (Heb. 12:11); blessing according to God’s
sovereignty |
III.
Conclusion: From the Picture to Our Experience
|
Aspect |
Jacob |
Us |
|
What we see |
Everything he
experienced was arranged by God’s hand. |
The persons,
matters, and experiences in our environment are all under Romans 8:28. |
|
What we lose |
Craftiness, natural
strength, favoritism, control. |
The self-reliant elements
of our old creation. |
|
What we gain |
The new name
Israel; worship, blessing, peace. |
Christ
constituted into us, bearing the fruit of the Spirit. |
|
Ultimate goal |
The twelve
tribes, the house of God. |
The corporate
expression of the Triune God (Eph. 3:16-21). |
